We inched closer to the edge of the back alley of the casino, where only busboys emptied the trash and bouncers exited to end their shift. The back door was our only chance of getting in and out unseen.

From my last encounter with heels, I stuck to boots this time, long tights, and a crop top. I considered a short sleeve would help keep me cool since the last outfit I had was sticking to me like lint on a black top, but it didn’t cross my mind how sitting here waiting at dawn was going to nip at my flesh either.

The streetlights still lit the back alleyway at four a.m. As the last employee left the casino, we tried to conceal ourselves as much as possible by the trash. The smell of moldy cheese soaked into my clothes and ivory hair.

The employees would return in the early afternoon to prepare for opening at three p.m. which meant Connell and I had plenty of time to search the office. That was if we were able to sneak past the security guards, of which none were human. I actually didn’t know what paranormal creatures they were, but I figured they were in the “not to be messed with category.”

Connell and I peeked past the dumpster’s edge to scan the backdoor of the casino. As we waited for the last few people to exit, Connell shuffled back around to let me know there were still employees exiting.

A security guard passed by. There wasn’t a flashlight in the security guard's hand, but his eyes luminesce like a cat, so he must’ve been able to see in the dark. Even with his glowing yellow eyes, I still had no clue what he was.

The security guard pulled on the door handle. Double-checking he locked it then walked away as his shift came to an end.

“Now remember when we get in, the place has traps and some guards inside. Stay close to me and as low to the ground as possible and we won’t get caught.”

“What about cameras?”

“I sneak in all the time, I know where they are and where we’re going, we won’t get caught.”

“You’re lying,” he said.

“Yes I am, but I figured we needed a confidence boost since this is probably the way we die.”

Connell rolled to his knees, digging through his back pocket for his wallet. With a lopsided grin, he busted out a plastic card and peered around the edge of the dumpster like a scalded cat.

“Picking a lock with a credit card? That is your master plan right now?”

He winked. “We’re sneaking around like ninja’s, and if I open the door, I might even get the girl bonus.” He fished out a half-smile as sweet as melon dew, then creeped out into the open and sprinted to the door.

Thank goodness because my cheeks were filled with crimson. Flirting was not safe territory and for some reason, Connell affected me. More than I was willing to admit.

Crouching, I dashed to the door. I let Connell start picking at it.
